A new year means new resolutions, goals, and diets. My resolution is to lose weight. I’ve plotted a 8-month regimen to help me reach my goal by my birthday. Basically, I will be making 3 simple changes to my already active lifestyle. 1) I’ll be eating off of salad plates and skimping on the bread. 2) My ever-so-active dog will be taking me for a walk every evening for at least 30 minutes. 3) I will attempt to consume 64 ounces of water a day.
Whatever your New Year’s resolutions may be, here are a few simple ways to aim for an even healthier 2009:
- Aim for balance and moderation. Whether you are a vegetarian or an omnivore, moderation is key. Protein servings should be no larger than a deck of playing cards. Eat by color to make sure you’re getting a variety of nutrients. Try eating off a smaller plate, which help with portion control by tricking your eyes into seeing a fuller plate. Also, remember to listen to your stomach and know when you are full.
Get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Walk the dog, play with the kids or go for a brisk walk after dinner with the one you love. Check out some of our workouts, many of which you can do at home.
- Drink water. Water is the bodies life line, It regulates temperature, helps with digestion, hydrates, and keeps skin soft and supple. I carry a water bottle around with me. Sipping on water all day keeps my hunger pains at bay and curbs cravings. Keep track of the size bottle you carry and how many times you refill in a day. You can also get water by eating fluid-rich foods. (Check out our tips and recipes.)
- Have fun. There’s nothing worse than getting bored with a regimen. Switch up your activities and get the whole family involved. This month I am going to try a water aerobics class. Who knows, next month I might be doing yoga or belly dancing again.
