Giveaways | Quick and Easy
The September issue is out, and I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s packed full of tips, recipes, and tricks for the busy home cook…and doesn’t that describe each and every one of us? This week we’re giving away two tools that aim to make quick work of chopping, grating and prepping from a great kitchen gadget company, OXO.
But first, a recap from last week’s giveaway. Congrats to Gayle with her mouth-watering description on Spicy Corn on the Cob Soup that made us rush to find the last juicy ears of summer corn.
“Spicy Corn on the Cob Soup is an end-of-summer treat that I wish I could have all year. The ‘naked’ cobs are simmered with sautéed onion, jalapeno, celery, cumin and turmeric, and the corn is added (and cobs removed) for the last half of simmering. Garnish with chopped green onions.”
And in response to @LaureeAshcom who smartly commented that these giveaways shouldn’t be limited to Facebook fans only…we hear you. This week, we encourage you to like us on Facebook or follow on Twitter for a chance to win. In the coming weeks, we’ll change it up again. We don’t want to leave anyone out.
This week’s winner will receive an OXO Hand-Held Julienne Slicer that makes quick and precise work of carrots, cucumber, and other veggies for salads, stir-fries, and even sushi. The winner will also receive an OXO Pro Hand Held Grater, which has a blade that allows you to grate from both directions (making it faster). This is ideal for hard cheese, chocolate, zest, ginger, and garlic.
Step 1: “Like” us on Facebook (use the Facebook box to the right and click “Like” if you don’t already like us) OR follow us on Twitter @Cooking_Light.
Step 2: Describe for us here in 50 words or less how you use your favorite kitchen gadget to get dinner on the table in a flash. Entries should be typed into the comments field of this blog post. Entries are due by Monday, August 30 at 11:59 a.m. EST.
Editors will select their favorite based on originality, creativity, and how well you address our question. Winner will be notified via email by Sept 2, 2010. For full contest rules, click here.

My favorite tool is my mini food processor! We love adding onions to our dishes and it is so handy to get them quickly chopped and in the pan. It is also great for a quick coleslaw or homemade bread crumbs.
I use my Kyocera mandoline slicer for a super quick "everything" salad. Once the lettuce is in the bowl, I literally take anything I have around (carrots, peppers, red onion, apples, etc.) and slice it all into the salad bowl!
My slow-cooker! I can throw practically any meat and veggie in with some sauce or lemon juice salt & pepper. Only takes a few minutes to load, and it does the rest of the work! Meat comes out very tender and is never dry!
I love my hand held cheese grater. Not only do I grate cheese with it but I use it on potatoes, carrots, zucchini, and more. I would be lost without it.
I use my Pampered Chef Crinkle Cutter for veggies almost every night - carrots, potatoes, zucchini - my kids love the fun shapes so they eat more veggies! I like it because I have more control over the blade versus a regular knife! It's a win-win!!!
My favorite kitchen gadget has to be my garlic press! It adds so much flavor to all my cooking, and with such little effort. I save time chopping up garlic, AND in washing knives/cutting boards (both of which have to be hand washed). Even better - it goes in the dishwasher. Flavor, without the fuss!

My kitchen gadget that helps me get food to the table faster is my egg slicer because I use it for slicing so many other things; strawberries, bannas, avacados, tofu, beets...always works great and so easy to clean up too!
my immersion blender is my favorite kitchen gadget. Instead of dirtying up a food processor for certain recipes, I just use the immersion blender right in the bowl. I make my tofu veggie lasagna in a flash. I can also make quick hummos and puree soups right in the pot. Then the blender part pops right off the motor and I can put it in the dishwasher for easy cleanup.
My favorite kitchen gadget is my Breville Toaster Oven. I use it year round to quickly heat dinner rolls, pastries or to melt cheese on sandwiches or leftovers Making cooking meals a breeze!
The low-cost food processor that I bought a couple of years ago is amazing. I use it at least every other day for making healthy soups, sauces, marinades, hummus, salads, salad dressings, and preserves. I used to think it was just another kitchen appliance, but has become a staple since I'm quite busy and have stopped eating out.
A favorite purchase this summer is a set of magnetic nesting measuring spoons with a bowl on one side & an elongated bowl on other so it can fit in small spice jars. The bowl bottoms are flat so you can place on counter w/out tipping over. I can find them easily in the drawer & they've sped up my food prep time.
My favorite kitchen tool is my Silpat. I started out just using it for cookies, but it makes clean-up a breeze on so much more! Everything from biscuits to oven-fried chicken comes out perfectly browned and never stuck to the pan. It's a wonder gadget!
I am known as the Crock-Pot Queen. My favorite is to throw in boneless skinless chicken breasts right from the package with stock & veggies in the morning. When you come home, just open & stir & the chicken will just shred into the soup. Doesn't get easier than that!
Without a doubt, my favorite kitchen tool is my digital kitchen scale. I love it because it helps me to keep my portions in check. I debated buying one for a long time because I thought I was pretty good at "eyeballing" portions. But once I got one and started using it, I was shocked to see how much "overestimating" I was doing.
The Pampered Chef chopper is awesome. I can take an onion and have it in cut up in no time (while getting my frustrations out!) and all with no tears. It also works wonderfully on other veggies or herbs. After I am done with it, it goes straight in the dishwasher. It makes it easy to add veggies to my meal. (ps. I don't work for PC)
During the summer, we BBQ almost every night. Our specialty is BBQ pizza. All I need to get dinner on in 15 minutes is my favorite pair of tongs and pizza cutter (both OXO)! So simple, so fast, and SO delicious!
My favorite gadget is my Laptop. It let's me get to MyRecipes.com to find a great idea for dinner that is simple and tasty!
Mixer, grinder, mortar & pestle, knives, tongs, slicers, flipper, stirrer, lifter, things for adding and things for taking stuff out….nothing is as great as my 5 year old when she pulls up a stool “next side me” and asks how she can help. It puts a spring in my step.
I love my microplane grater. I use it all the time for citrus zesting, parm cheese, nutmeg -- it's so much handier than pulling out the large grater.
When I make anything, I use Fresh Ingredients. That means Garlic, Onion, Pepper, sea salt, carrots, celery. . .
The problem are the onions. I don't want my face to look like a ballon, so I don my Onion Goggles (from chefs.com) and merrily chop away! I may look like a dork, but no tears!!
My magnetic Spice Tins are a life-saver. I dry my herbs, place them in my tins and when I need to season up some hollandaise on a Sunday Morning, I can see what herbs I can use easily!
I love my knives. There's nothing like a great set of knives.
My hands are my favorite multi-purpose kitchen gadget - easy to clean, wash and they swiftly change tasks.
My kitchen shears from OXO are my favorite kitchen gadget! I can't believe I got through cooking without them before...but having a pair of these has really paid off for some really interesting cutting jobs!
