2010_Hotel_banner Thanks to the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival, we’re hosting a special giveaway this week for our Facebook fans. This exciting event brings 70 restaurants, 170 wineries, celebrity chefs, artisans, and lovers of great food and wine together Nov 17-21st in beautiful San Diego for a culinary-palooza. Want to join the fun? Read on to find out how you might win tickets, passes to tastings, hotel accommodations, and more.

A wine expert and educator once taught me that describing a wine in terms of a famous actor or actress can sometimes tell it all. Let’s practice: A glass of shiraz is like George Clooney, rich, dramatic, and sometimes a bit wild. And dessert-worthy Sauternes can be as preciously sweet as Dakota Fanning (in Charlotte’s Web, not the Twilight movies). You can do this in broad terms by variety, but it also works well to describe a particular wine you love. 2009_wine_food_Festival_press_1

If you’d like to play, here’s how it works:

Step 1: “Like” us on Facebook (use the Facebook box to the right and click “Like” if you don’t already like us).

Step 2: Describe for us here in 50 words or less a wine variety or specific label in terms of a famous entertainer, politician, or other public figure. Entries should be typed into the comments field of this blog post. Entries are due by Tuesday, November 2 at 11:59 a.m. EST.

Editors will select their favorite based on originality, creativity, and how well you address our question. Winner will be notified via email by November 4, 2010. For full contest rules, click here.

The winner will receive:

Two tickets to the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival Reserve & New Release Tasting and Silent Auction Nov 19th
Two tickets to the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival Grand Tasting Event on Nov. 20th
Two tickets to a San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival cooking class of your choice
Two-night stay at the Omni San Diego Hotel.

Cheers!

Sparkling moscato reminds me of Carol King...sweet melodies and surprising harmonies!

Just found out Marilyn Monroe has a wine named after her...Marilyn Merlot, by Marilyn wines!! I love red wines and would love to try this! Its spendy and apparently you get a peep show on the bottle!lol

Gewürztraminer is like Elizabeth Taylor.....pale and quite full-bodied with a strong, heady, perfumey scent!

I love Bogle's old vine Zinfandel. I would compare its flavors to Clint Eastwood. Mature and bold with a spicy, peppery nuance but if you pay enough attention, you can pick out a soft, sweet taste. So complex and enjoyable you keep going back for more!

I love Menage a Trois red. Although I have never been involved in such behavior, when I drink Menage I imagine I am having a rendezvous with my favorite spies, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) and 007 (Sean Connery.) It's a ten to twelve dollar trip to France without needing a passport! :-)

A good NZ Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of Laura Linny in her current role on the show "The Big C". Initially somewhat reserved, cool, tightly "flavored" transitioning to more "sauvage", fresh, lively and satisfying.

Cabernet Sauvignon is like Paul Newman - while young, seemingly bold and straightforward with a rough edge that you definitely enjoy but over the years it gets better and better gaining an integrity, complexity, and richness of character that create a rare longevity and universal appreciation with consistent enjoyment.

Moscato reminds me of the Eagles, smooth, sweet, and enjoyable.

Never judge a wine by it's cup, but if you must, choose wisely, for while the true Grail will bring you life, the false Grail will take will take it from you.

Jacuzzi Vineyards Bianco di Sei Sorelle is a crisp and complex wine offering fresh flavors of peach and pear. This refreshing version of Chardonnay makes me wish I was sharing a bottle with Gerard Butler in a "jacuzzi."

Flashy labels and names can add a little fun to wine drinking. Wines that sport labels named after famous people may make you roll your eyes but you need to keep an open mind or you may accidentally pass over a hidden gem. Buy once for the label and then for the quality!

A good Zinfandel is like Johnny Depp. It's rich, smokey, and utterly seductive.

Southern California's own wine varieties bring me back to the place where my heart lives. Every time I press the wine glass to my lips I close my eyes and am wisked away to the sandy beaches, cool breezes and warm sunshine of my favorite city in America.

A glass of sparkling white zinfandel performs like America’s sweetheart Taylor Swift, with refreshing charisma, sweet nuances and bubbly charm throughout, as well as the ever present threat of a very public country “pop” hit should you shake it the wrong way.

A crisp Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of another Vintage… George Clooney. It starts with a complex yet shrill opening but given enough exposure, certainly leaves me fading into a state of unconsciousness.

When I have a glass of Matchbook Shiraz. I travel in time to the 50's. Frank Sinatra is singing That's Life. Ahhh it sure is.
Then my iPhone rings and I am brought back to reality. I am drinking my Shiraz with Buble singing That's Life on my ringer. ha ha That's my Life!

A petite syrah reminds me of Lucy Liu -- petite by description, but has a ton of spunk and packs a big punch.

Ronna Farley replied on October 29, 2010 at 03:04 PM

I would compare Cabernet Sauvignon wine to reality star Kim Kardashian.
She comes from one of the world’s most famous families. She is young, full-bodied and smooth, and she pairs best with a "meaty" man!

Jason Borkowski replied on November 01, 2010 at 07:04 PM

Deep, red, full, and exquisite in its silky, sexy, rich flavor, I can only compare Bogle Phantom to a kiss from the voluptuous lips of Scarlett Johansson. While I've had plenty of one, I'd give up some for a little taste of the other...

Layna McVay replied on November 01, 2010 at 07:05 PM

Stemilt Creek's Sweet Adelaide is like the animated character "Strawberry Shortcake". It is bright, sweet, spunky, and full of life.

Tracy Johnson replied on November 01, 2010 at 07:26 PM

A good wine is like Harrison Ford...well-aged, rustic, bold and and stands out from the rest.

julia armfield replied on November 01, 2010 at 08:19 PM

Any variety of Charles Schaw ,better known as "two buck chuck", reminds of me of Clint Howard (Ron Howard's brother). The wine is always consistant, doesn't cost much, and good enough in a pinch but certainly not great. Hardly memorable.
