StampouthungerTomorrow, Saturday, May 12, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will be celebrating its 20th year of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. The Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive. In 2011, 70.2 million pounds of food was donated, which brought the grand total of donations to more than 1.1 billion pounds of food collected over the history of the drive. Last year also marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected.

Unfortunately, despite the generosity of millions of Americans who have supported the food drive in previous years, the need for food assistance has never been greater. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's annual study measuring food security in the United States, nearly 50 million Americans are living in food insecure homes.

Here's how you can help the NALC fight hunger in America:

1. Collect and bag non-perishable food items, such as canned meats, fish, vegetables, soup, pasta, cereal, and rice.

2. Place the bags by your mail box. Local letter carriers will pick up the donated items and bring them to the local food bank – that’s the beauty of the drive, all donations stay in the local area to help residents in need.
