You might be noticing less than lovely lips this time of year, but it’s not necessarily the cold weather that’s causing them; it’s the increased dryness in the winter air. And it becomes a cycle: you lick them because they’re dry, which makes them drier due to an enzyme in saliva. Keeping them hydrated and sealing in that moisture should do the trick, but if your problematic pout persists or becomes painful, see your doctor or dermatologist.
Here are three solutions to prettify your pout:
If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors: Sun protection should be your priority. Nivea’s A Kiss of Protection ($3) boasts an SPF of 30. It goes on clear, but because it contains a relatively high SPF for a lip balm, it can leave a slightly white residue after several hours of wear. If that becomes a problem for you, try a lower SPF like the brand’s A Kiss of Smoothness ($4). It protects with SPF 10, so apply more frequently if you’ll be outside for an extended time.
If you want a hint of color: Look for a sheer, tinted balm, like Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm ($7). It comes in nine moisturizing shades and can be worn as a base under lipstick for a bolder look.
If you’re chapped to the max: You need a thicker, medicated formula to help strengthen lips’ moisture barrier. I like a two-pronged approach to severely dry lips: A medicated formula during the day, like Blistex Lip Medex ($1) and a nighttime formula that softens and strengthens as you sleep. Chapstick’s Overnight Lip Treatment ($4) is a great option.
