anchorbeerEvery Friday, we select a new beer, wine, or liquor to put through the tasting gauntlet. Here’s our latest pick. 

With temperatures in the 60s, it seems that spring is nearly upon us in Alabama. And what better way to welcome the season than with Anchor Brewing’s Anchor Bock Beer.

Deep and malty, this dark-colored brew is touted as the brewery’s stronger, kickier version of their “regular,” year-round beer, the Anchor Steam Beer. The Bock is, indeed, deeper in flavor—roasty, chocolate notes make up the crux of the beer, which has just a hint of bitterness at the end. However, we actually found the Anchor Steam to be sharper and punchier than its sibling, due to a more intense, floral hop-driven bitter edge. Fans of wheat beers and IPAs will likely enjoy the Anchor Steam.

Most of our tasters preferred the Bock; its combination of dark, caramel flavors and a bright bitter finish make it a perfect transition from winter to spring. Plus, who can resist the label’s adorable goat?

Serve with: Chili, chargrilled meats like steak or lamb chops
