The holidays are soon upon us, and with their arrival comes stress. Maybe it’s self-imposed, but nonetheless, you feel it. Perfect decorations need to go up; entertaining obligations balloon; gift buying frenzies occur; and my favorite: preparing multi-coursed meals that you haven’t even thought about since last year.
Here is a simple tip to help relieve one of the most common holiday crazies: Practice.
Over and over again, people tell me how intimidated they are with pie crust, or how difficult they think it is to get a great flaky crust. Let me ask you a question: How many attempts do you think it takes to paint a masterpiece? Or compose a symphony? I would bet anything that we have never heard or seen the artist’s or the composer’s first attempts. Anything really great takes practice.
Start by investing $10 in yourself. Go to the market, and buy a bag of all-purpose flour and a pound of butter. Pull out your favorite aunt’s recipe for pie dough, and practice, practice, practice. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You have wasted $10.00 or the cost of 2 small lattes. What’s the best possible outcome? You will be able to make delicious, flaky pie crust for your pumpkin and pecan pies this holiday season, plus all your future apple, peach, lemon meringue, and chocolate cream pies.
The more you practice, the more relaxed and confident you will feel. And when it comes time to bake your holiday pies you will have one less stressor this holiday season.
