Tasty Pumpkin Beers for Fall

UnknownFall officially begins Sunday and there is so much to be excited about in the food and beverage world: Pumpkin Beer, pumpkin lattes, figs, apple pies.

You do have to do some searching to find a pumpkin beer that’s not super sweet and doesn’t use artificial extracts to infuse that pumpkin flavor into the beer.

Two we tried today brewed with real pumpkin, and tasted very different; both delicious in their own way.

The Dogfish Head Punkin  we thought was great for an anytime pumpkin ale. Flavorful but drinkable, this beer had a strong pumpkin flavor up front with afternotes of brown sugar and a little cinnamon. This beer would be good with any Fall dish. There’s no overpowering sweetness, bitterness, or spiciness to drown out a meal.

Suggested food pairing: Apple, Goat Cheese, and Pecan Pizza

The Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale, a stronger ale, would be a great after dinner beer or to be paired with a strong flavored dish or dessert. We tasted a lot of delicious spice up front here—cloves, cardamom, cinnamon— and then a more subtle pumpkin flavor to go along with it. Craft beer enthusiasts will love the complexity of this beer.

Suggested Food Pairing: Pork Chops with Roasted Apples and Onions

Since this IS a “cooking light” blog, I wish you had mentioned the calorie counts of these delicious-sounding pumpkin beers. In fact, I wish all beers (not just “light” ones) were required to list nutritional information, just like foods are.

That sounds delicious, Ginger. I love the Pumpking also, but have never had it with Guiness.
