5 on Friday: These are a few of my favorite things of 2013…

As Cooking Light’s beauty editor, I’m lucky in that I get to “play” with a lot of beauty products. Most are great, but a few really stand out. These products aren’t all new, but they are items I genuinely loved using in 2013. What were your favorites? What products are you looking forward to trying in 2014?

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette ($52, urbandecay.com)
Eye shadow aficionados have likely heard of this go-to grouping of neutral shadows. There are 12 shades that allow you to get an everyday look and easily transition to an evening-friendly shimmery or smoky eye. I love that it comes with a high quality, double-ended brush, too. Advanced cosmetic junkies will know that the brand recently released a rose-inspired third installment of the palette series—it’s hard to find!—but personally I prefer the more taupe-y vibe happening with Naked 2. | Photo: Cindy Hatcher

Orla Kiely for Target Cosmetic Bag Collection (from $10, target.com)
I’ve been a big fan of this Irish clothing and accessories designer for a while, but she’s mainly out of my price range. Enter her collaboration with Target this year. I needed (well…“needed”) a new makeup bag for traveling, so I was stoked to see her colorful prints on Target shelves recently. There are several different sizes, shapes, and patterns, but I’m a big fan of the Sweet Pea Weekender since it opens flat and you can see all of your stuff. And the bright pattern just plain makes me happy. | Photo: Target

CoverGirl Clump Crusher by LashBlast ($7, covergirl.com)
All of the LashBlast mascaras are pretty great, in my opinion, but I really like the Clump Crusher variety. Not just because the name makes me feel like a super hero, but because it really performs just as the name says: length without clumps. I like the regular (non-waterproof) variety in black-brown. Give the brush a little wiggle as you pull it through lashes for extra lengthening power. | Photo: CoverGirl

Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret ($100, curlsecret.com)
Ok, this thing is cool. Though I mainly tame my wavy/frizzy locks into straight submission, I occasionally like the look of springy ringlets. This thing does all the work for you: you just clamp down on a section of hair, watch as it sucks it up into the barrel, and release after a few seconds. It took a few attempts and watching the video on the product’s web site, but it’s a super-fun way to change up your look. | Photo: Macy’s

Youthmud by Glamglow ($69, Sephora.com)
Honestly, I love all three products this company makes. And they’ve developed a cult following for a reason, but this specific mask gives my skin a brightening boost that lasts for days. I also love to dab their Supermud mask on blemishes and Brightmud under my eyes in the morning. Good news for fans of the brand: They’re about to launch Thirstymud, which promises to give skin a big moisture boost. | Photo: Sephora
