Just a 5 Percent Weight Loss Can Dramatically Improve Your Health

In a world of instant gratification, we expect quick, satisfying results from everything. Instantaneous text responses, faster fast food, same-day deliveries. You name it, we want it right away. The same can be said of dieting. Not only do we expect a diet program to deliver results right away, we expect big results to boot. If we can’t lose ALL the weight we need to lose, what’s the point of losing any?


Wait, is this thing broken? I just started this diet five minutes. WHERE ARE MY RESULTS?!

According to a new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, though, you don’t have to drop all the weight you want right away to see a healthier impact on your overall health.

Dr. Samuel Klein, a professor of medicine and nutritional science at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and senior author of the study, says that even minor weight-loss has “important health benefits for multiple organ systems.” In fact, losing just 5 percent of your body fat can have profoundly positive effects on your health, like lower levels of the fat linked to heart disease, decreased numbers of systolic blood pressure, and improved insulin sensitivity. The more weight lost after that 5 percent body fat, the better.

So you don’t have to see big, fast results to know you’re making great progress and doing your body favors.     This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that even just a five percent loss of weight could benefit your health. I’ve struggled with my weight for a while now, and I’ve finally decided to do something about it. Although I don’t expect instant results, I’ll definitely look forward to gradual improved health.
