Another Big Win For Consumers In Big Food—Hellmann’s Now Offers Organic And Egg-Less Options!

In 2014, the maker of Hellmann’s sued Hampton’s Creek for marketing Just Mayo, an eggless spread, as “mayonnaise.” Unilever argued that the product, made with yellow peas in lieu of eggs, failed to comply with the Food and Drug Administration‘s definition of mayonnaise as an emulsion of vegetable oils, vinegar and/or lemon and lime juice, and egg yolks. The company also accused Just Mayo’s label, an egg cracking in the shape of a pea shoot, of tricking consumers into thinking the product is made with eggs. A few weeks later, Unilever dropped its lawsuit for false advertising and fraud.

Now, over a year later, Hellmann’s announced four new products, one of which is cleverly called “Carefully Crafted Dressing & Sandwich Spread.” (Psst, it’s an egg-free mayonnaise.)

Free from cholesterol, eggs, artificial colors, and flavors, Carefully Crafted is 100% plant based and made with all-natural ingredients. In a recent taste test, our staffers loved its buttery texture and described it as perfect for homemade Caesar salad dressings, slaws, and our favorite Southern classic deviled eggs.

The company also introduced its first line of USDA-approved organic mayonnaise spreads available in three different flavors: Original, Spicy Chipotle, and Roasted Garlic. We appreciate the fact that each is made with cage-free eggs and other non-GMO sourced ingredients, but they’re also tasty.

The taste testers at Cooking Light loved the Spicy Chipotle’s delightful tones of smokiness and suggested adding Roasted Garlic to every gyro on planet Earth. (Ain’t nothing wrong with garlic breath!)

Verdict: Our Nutrition Editor Sidney Fry responded with excitement, “Organic, Non-GMO, and that’s HUGE!”

Recently, many big brands have announced plans to go non-GMO and all-natural—we’re thrilled to see Hellmann’s join the movement! As Fry said in her latest report on Perdue nuggets and strips joining the antibiotic-free lineup, “Another consumer win! Keep talking, folks. Big food is listening.”

    In this evaluation lots of points are thrown out there. Plant-based = good. Good taste test results = good. Cage-free = good if oversimplified. Non-GMO = Cooking Light is contributing to public confusion on a non-issue. In a recent poll, the number of scientists who were worried about the safety of GMOs was slightly less than the number of scientists who say climate change is not a thing. I get that you are not a scientific publication. I’d encourage you to simply steer clear of this issue if you are not going the evidence-based route.
